How to Handle a Broken Window Safely and Efficiently
Broken windows should be taken care of immediately for a number of reasons. Not only are they safety hazard due to the sharpness of the broken glass, but they can allow unauthorized access to your home or business. They can also significantly affect the energy efficiency in your home. If you’ve suffered a broken window then we recommend you read on to find out how to handle it and then contact Charles Window for replacement options.
First things first: Clean up the glass
Before you do anything else, you need to clean up the broken glass. Start by moving furniture and anything else that’s in the way. If there’s glass on said furniture, then you’ll need to clean it separately. Once it’s out of the way, grab your broom and sweep up the largest pieces of glass. Then throw them away safely.
You’ll want to do a more thorough sweeping at this point to get rid of smaller pieces of glass and then throw them away. If the area has carpet, use a vacuum to carefully clean the area and remove glass. If the area is tile or linoleum, use a mop to clean the surface.
Make sure you’re paying attention to the crevices where pieces can hide, or smaller pieces of glass. A vacuum hose attachment is great at getting into crevices that may be hiding glass. If there are tiny shards, then a piece of duct tape is great a picking them up. As far as your furniture goes, use your vacuum’s hose attachments and brushes to get them clean.
Get your windows covered
Next, you want to get your window covered. If there are still big pieces of glass hanging from your window’s frame, then get rid of these carefully. If they’re stuck in the frame then don’t force them out. Instead, get a piece of cardboard and cut it to cover the broken area. Tape it securely into place. Note that this will help keep the elements out of your home but it isn’t secure – you still need to get it repaired sooner rather than later.
